5 out of 5 stars Very Cool External CD/DVD Drive   June 24, 2010
I love this drive. I have a laptop with a 1x internal drive, which is virtually
useless for homw use, though quite useful for on the road use. I can't begin to
count how many CDs and DVDs I've burned with this drive. It is rock solid
reliable, and very fast. The only complaint I have, and it's not really a
complaint about the drive. is that you can only do LightScribe at 1X, so it
takes freaking forever. LightScribe is pretty much a deadend technology since
it ties up your CD/DVD burner for so long. Also, don't bother buying color
Lightscribe discs, because you can't really see the labels very clearly on a
color disc. Anyway, aside from the whole Lightscribe issue it's an awesume
drive.

4 out of 5 stars LG external dvd burner works just fine with iMac   April 16, 2010

Needed an external dvd burner and after extensive searching online decided on the LG USB 20X DVD/48X CD unit. Good reviews and reasonable price. My only concern was - would it work with my iMac G5? For some reason, manufacturers don't seem to spend much effort explaining compatibility issues. As a Mac user I've had to dig extra deep to find answers to that problem in the past.

I'd read that the LG burner ships with Windows compatible software only, but after contacting LG support, they assured me that my Mac would recognize this burner and work just fine, and it did. Just plugged it in and it worked with iTunes, no software needed. Burning CD's to iTunes is really fast, much faster than my old burner. It's a little noisy when it rev's up to 40X but that doesn't bother me. I haven't burned any DVD's yet.

I think the Windows software is mainly for the Lightscribe feature, which I don't use. I should also say that LG's response to my question was the fastest I've ever experienced online. Literally within a couple of minutes I had an answer. So far, so good.

5 out of 5 stars Works just fine.   February 1, 2010

Easiest installation option, plug in and go. I bought this because my five year old internal 16X DVD/CD player/burner quit reading DVDs. I'm not sure if you get better performance from an internal disk drive, or if there are operation issues with a USB connected devices. I havn't noticed any with this drive. The price is right when comparing with other external (or internal) drives of the same caliber. I havn't tried the lightscribe option yet because you need special discs, but as an artist, it looks like a cool way to get a professional looking label rather than using a sharpie. FYI, you have to download the Lightscribe software from their website, all other nessesary/optional software is included with the driver.

I love my DVD drive because my laptop does not have one but this one is very easy to use and came with a lot of added features.
